Winning the war for talents: Retention – How to beat fluctuation and keep your global hires
I received a phone call from a global client early this year who said “Gary, we need to do something . We find it hard to find skilled co-workers and Managers. We recruit worldwide. People come for a while, even a couple of years then they leave. It’s really hard to find and keep good people. We’re smack in the middle of the war for Talent. Fluctuation is eating into our profits. We need to know how to keep global international expert team members and Managers happy”.
Retention. Keeping the global workforce happy. We spent a lot of time researching the question. How can you keep your co-workers happy and stop the bleed of fluctuation
In a nutshell, we came to a simple but complicated answer. Simple because it seems if you want people to work for you for a long time, you need to keep them happy by just focusing on 4 principles, we’ve called the APPS model:
A for Appreciation: The need for appreciation, for respect, to feel taken care of is a fundamental need, hard wired into our brains.
P for Purpose: Happy team members are those who experience a sense, a meaning a purpose in what they do and why they doing it.
P for Pleasure: Boys and girls just wanna have fun. All work and no fun makes Jack a dull boy as they say. It also makes him look for a new job.
S for Security. People who don’t experience security, whose inherent need for safety isn’t met will look for it elsewhere:
So far so simple, right? Just fulfill those 4 elements. What’s the complication? Culture!
Cultural background has a massive impact on how we show or how we recognise appreciation or respect.
Cultural makeup impacts what gives us a sense of purpose, what gives us that bigger sense of why we are doing what we are doing.
Our culture impacts what gives our kicks, how we derive pleasure
And yes, of course, how we derive security is not just individual, in our cultural grass roots we learn how to require and recognize security which makes us want to stay in our jobs longer
The good news is, we can help. The even better news, the solutions we offer in terms of training and consulting will cost you a lot less than fluctuation is costing you now. www.international-hr.de.
